PARMA HEIGHTS, Ohio -- There is another sign that life is slowly beginning to return to normal: The St. John Bosco 5K Race and 1-mile Walk will return June 5. The event was canceled last year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Registration is under way for the seventh annual race/walk that benefits the Parma Heights Food Pantry and St. John Bosco St. Vincent de Paul Society. Participants can sign up online at sbjparmaheights.org.

Entry fee is $25 for the 5K and $10 for the 1-mile walk until race day, when the price for the walk increases to $15. Entries include a race T-shirt.

Registration can be mailed, with a check payable to St. John Bosco Parish, to the parish at 6480 Pearl Road, Parma Heights, Ohio 44130. Mail registration must be received by June 1. All entries are non-refundable.

Race packets can be picked up from 4 to 6:30 p.m. June 4 or 7:30 to 8:15 a.m. June 5 at the St. John Bosco Bell Tower.

The chip-timed race and the walk begin at 8:30 a.m. from the church parking lot. The route will travel through the nearby Cleveland Metroparks.

A pre-race pasta dinner, catered by Bruno’s, will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. June 4 at the parish. Cost is $8 for a pasta dinner, $12 for eggplant or lasagna. There also will be gift baskets and a raffle.

Registration forms for sponsors and participants are available at sjbparmaheights.org/parish-news/sjb5krun/.

Flagpole dedication: Charles Jennings of the York Street Cemetery Preservation Committee sends word that the new flagpole installed at the cemetery in Parma will be dedicated during the Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. May 31.

Jennings said that for many years, the Al Sirat Grotto conducted a service on Memorial Day at the cemetery, which is on West Pleasant Valley Road near the York Road intersection. This year, the Grotto donated and installed a flagpole at the cemetery, which was established in 1835.

The cemetery contains the grave of the only Revolutionary War veteran buried in the city, as well as veterans from the Civil War and World War I.

Jennings said the York Street Cemetery Preservation Committee was formed in 1999 to clean up and restore what was at that time a long-neglected cemetery.

Job opportunities: The City of Independence has several jobs available -- both full time and part time -- including firefighter, community resource coordinator, community services director, summer camp counselor, lifeguards, maintenance personnel and more.

Children should bring their bicycles and helmets to the free event, which will include a bike skills safety course, city safety vehicles and members of the safety forces, a DJ, Safety Town information, prizes and more.
