Let’s review, right off the bat. Remember what we said about everyday being ‘Something Day’? Yes, that’s right. Well, did you know that Friday is National Picnic Day?
For the record, we can’t arrange for everyone to take the day off to go on a picnic. Despite your kooky neighbor’s assertions, the media is not that powerful. Sometimes, like now, all we can do is suggest.
In this case, we suggest pie.
And while we’re on the subject of pie, how about The Pie Hole? Easy now, we mean the Pie Hole shop/eatery on Colorado Boulevard in that building with the ice cream shop in it.
The Pie Hole has a picnic special of its own, which we sampled earlier this week. It was yum. And since the shop, while charming, doesn’t lend itself to picnics, we took it all to go, and spread it all out on the deck at home, to enjoy under cloudy skies, since sunshine is in your mind, and all of that.
We got the Picnic for Two, which was two slices of pie—the apple crumb, and the boysenberry—four pie holes, a house salad, and two drinks. They also have savory pies, which they were sadly all out of, when we arrived.
And now, a word about the pie holes. This is what they are: Think of those little packaged pies you find in every grocery store and convenience store. Now imagine those a little smaller, and handmade by real bakers and not machines. We tried the strawberry, the chocolate filled, the boysenberry, and something delicious we ate so fast, I can’t remember it.
Each is a delicate and delicious little party, that you will likely devour in two bites. The salad was fresh and crisp, and even the Arnold Palmer was still mixed perfectly after a ride home in the car.
The Pie Hole could be a sweet alternative to sandwiches and chips at your picnic, wherever you decide to have it.
