Montgomery Village Board President Matt Brolley had to be the tiebreaker in what ended up as a four to three vote Monday on a decision to allow a hot dog stand to operate in the parking lot of a shopping center in the 1800 block of Douglas Road.
The vendor in question, Georgie's Chicago Hot Dogs, is said to have been operating without a permit from the village for some time.
Trustee Doug Marecek voted against granting the licence. He says that such vendors have a competitive edge over brick and mortar restaurants.
Trustee Theresa Sperling, who also voted no, expressed concern that the hot dog stand is close to Dairy Queen, which also could sell hot dogs. Trustee Dan Gier said that a hot dog vendor operating out of a trailer shouldn't be a major threat to any established business. He voted yes for the permit.
Board President Matt Brolley says it's unfortunate that there doesn't appear to be much separation, or green space, between the hot dog stand and other eateries, but that as long as the property owner is okay with the vendor he is too.
Trustee Steve Jungermann also voted no. Trustees Denny Lee and Thomas Betsinger voted yes.
George Torrens, who owns the hot dog stand was appreciative to the board for the approval.
At its July 13th meeting, the village board unanimously voted to approve an outdoor food vendor just north of the area where the hot dog stand is on Douglas Road.
