A roundup of local food, drink and restaurant news:

A new brunch spot in the New Center area of Detroit will be named after one of the best athletes of all time.

Joe Louis Southern Kitchen at 6549 Woodward Ave., which will pay homage to Louis through its decor, plans a grand opening for Friday — the day after the late legendary boxer's birthday.

The all-day brunch restaurant, which will be open 7 a.m.-3 p.m. daily, is a partnership between Sweet Magnolia's owner Johnny Cannon and Joe Louis II, son of the legendary boxer.

On the menu will be items such as shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, bread pudding and key lime pie pancakes.

The 2,600-square-foot restaurant will seat 80 and employ 20-25 people.

The Ferndale Project kitchen is closed for a week as its new head chef changes up the food menu at the taproom and restaurant.

The Ferndale Project, located at 567 Livernois, is working on new Latin American street food options, according to an Instagram post. While its culinary team preps the new offerings, The Ferndale Project will have a daily lineup of food trucks on its property from six different vendors.

The Ferndale Project is scheduled to reopen on May 19, according to the post.

The move comes after Detroit-based Eastern Market Brewing Co. bought Axle Brewing Co., including its Ferndale Tap location, in 2019. Last week, EMBC announced it is expanding again after taking over Roak Brewing Co.'s equipment and space in Royal Oak.

Great Lakes Pot Pies had such a good first year in its space in Clawson that it's expanding.

The business is adding to its 1,000-square-foot facility at 809 W. 14 Mile Road and taking over an additional 1,500 square feet of neighboring space.

Cost of the expansion is $80,000, according to owner Jannie Teitelbaum, who opened the pie shop in April 2020 after selling pies at the Royal Oak Farmer's Market in 2019. Teitelbaum invested $160,000 into the company's initial space.

Teitelbaum declined to disclose revenue figures, but said Great Lakes sold more than 40,000 pies in its first year. She projects about 100,000 pies — from traditional chicken pot pies to meatball, gluten-free and vegan varieties — will be sold in its second year.

Downtown Detroit dining options expanded recently when the Downtown Detroit Partnership brought back its Dowtown Street Eats program.

A variety of food trucks, including many minority- and Detroit-based participants, will be parked at downtown Detroit parks and public spaces from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Monday through Friday.

This week's offerings include Detroit's Original Seafood Truck, Smoke Ring BBQ and Los Dos Amigos taco truck. Food trucks that will be featured in the future include slider and wing specialists Curbside Eatery 313, Brass Kitchen, Sonny's Hamburgers, Impasto Italian wraps, and soul food trucks Tasy Fixin's Catering Co. and B.L. Ellis Catering.

Chipotle Mexican Grill is looking to bring on 20,000 new staffers nationwide, including 250 positions in metro Detroit, and will host a virtual career fair 1-4 p.m. EDT Thursday via community platform Discord.

The company website lists 60 jobs available at various Michigan locations.

The fast-food chain recently increased starting wages, which now range from $11 to $18 an hour, it said in a news release. Chipotle offers growth opportunities, a 401(k) retirement plan, tuition assistance, access to mental health care and a crew bonus program, which allows restaurant employees the opportunity to earn an extra month's pay each year they meet certain performance criteria.
