During our drive around the neighborhood the other day, Tim and I came across Pie and her humans out walking. You remember Pie – the sweet rescue pup who got away from her mom, Caitlin, last winter.
To recap, on Feb. 1, Pie went missing on the west side of the Peninsula, having gotten away after Caitlin slipped on the ice. Pie was on the run for two weeks in bitter cold temps, leaving Caitlin and everyone who loves her devastated.

The OMP community, along with Cherryland Humane Society and Grand Traverse County Animal Control, worked together towards Pie’s safe return home. People put out food, organized search parties, checked their outbuildings and decks, and reported various sightings, most notably in the Blue Water, Center, Devil’s Dive and Seven Hills Road area.
Two traps were set, and Pie finally wandered into the one near the corner of Center Road and Blue Water Road. The wayward pup was at long last delivered safely home to Caitlin. Read the full story of Pie’s disappearance, background, search efforts and return home here.
When we saw them the other day, Caitlin said she’s doing really well. And while she might always be a little skittish because of the neglectful situation she was in before coming to Caitlin’s home, she is doing much better and even cautiously let me pet her gently.
Here is Pie with Caitlin (holding her), Caitlin’s sister Meghan (back), their mom Tricia, and Walter, front. You might recall that Walter was one of our “Calendar Pups” a couple of years ago.
“She’s getting braver every day and definitely lives up to her nickname, Pie Pie the Warrior Pup!” says Caitlin. Pie also loves her “barky brothers,” Walter and Charlie. Here they all are in January of this year.
Here are a couple more photos from the other day. You’ll notice that Pie is now outfitted with a GPS tracker and an extra leash that’s affixed to Caitlin’s waist, in the event that another ice incident or other shenanigans happen. Also check out her adorable name tag.
While Pie’s biological birthday is unknown, Caitlin decided that “Pi Day” would be a great birthday for this dog, and so she turned three on March 14, 2021! The day was feted with a pup birthday cake and a special banner made by Caitlin. (Caitlin is a rockstar at banners. We had book club at her house one time, and she made a special banner for the club!)
Below are a few photos of the happy day. Most of the photos were taken by “Auntie Meghan,” who Caitlin says is Pie’s official photographer.
So glad that you are safe, happy and healthy, Pie! We wish you many more joyful birthdays in the coming years.
