MANCHESTER — With COVID-19 causing heightened food insecurity across the country over the past year, pantries have increasingly relied on private donations and support to help ease the burden at their distribution sites.
Dimitrios Lazaridis and Dylan McCall, owners and founders of My Papa’s Homemade, recently did their part to help out. This week, the pair dropped off 32 cases of their homemade pasta sauce — more than 300 jars in total — to the Manchester Area Conference of Churches.
McCall said that they were initially planning to give the donation around the holidays in December, but they didn’t want it to get lost in the shuffle during a time where many people donate.
“You can still donate even though the holidays are over,” McCall said. “You can give whenever; it doesn’t have to be at a certain time of year.”
Lazaridis said that the idea to donate came naturally — the business makes shelf-stable, homemade pasta sauce that fits the criteria of what pantries and shelters look for in terms of donations.
My Papa’s Homemade operates out of a suite at 642 Hilliard St., one of the old mill buildings in town. McCall and Lazaridis said it was important to them to donate locally, so they chose MACC.
They’ve been in that location for more than a year and said they truly started the business as a “grassroots” effort. The inspiration for the sauces comes from Lazaridis’ father, who was well known among family and friends for his culinary prowess.
After months of making the sauce out of just one pot, the duo have grown their operation and are able to crank out more supplies now — though they’re still making everything themselves. Now, My Papa’s Homemade can be found in almost 200 stores across New England.
“We started by just going to grocery stores and pitching our product, and store by store it built up,” McCall said.
With My Papa’s Homemade continuing to grow in town, the two expect to make more contributions to organizations in the future.
“Every day you’re alive is an opportunity to give, whether it’s your time or whether it’s a product,” Lazaridis said.
