Litchfield Students, Faculty Get Pie'd - thejournal-news.net

Students and staff members of Litchfield Middle School have raised $1,309 in just seven days in support of three local families who are battling childhood cancer. And as part of their fundraising efforts, they had the opportunity to “pie” another student or staff member on Tuesday afternoon, March 30, outside the school.

“The LMS Student Council planned to have a canned food drive this month, but when we heard about Jasper Swafford’s stay in the hospital, we decided there was a greater need,” said Jennifer Fleming, junior high language arts teacher and student council sponsor.

Students of Litchfield Middle School promptly showed their support and began working hard to help raise funds for each family.

Collectively, students and staff members raised the funds to benefit the families of Declan Treece, son of Sean and Rachel Treece, Hendrix Porter, son of Chris and Sara Porter, and Jasper Swafford, son of Tommy and Tricia Swafford, who sadly passed away Tuesday morning, March 30, following his battle with leukemia.

“The generosity and outpouring of love for these families have been unprecedented,” said Fleming.

The student council challenged each grade to raise $25 for a chance to pie a student council member from their grade level. If each grade raised $50, they would also be able to pie a teacher from their grade. If the entire school collectively raised $200, Dr. Tepen, the building principal, agreed to be pie’d.

“Clearly, these goals were too conservative! By the end of the fourth day, the building donated nearly $500 to the cause,” said Fleming.

Student Council members continued to raise the stakes and with each new goal, they added a layer of fun. As a result, Dr. Tepen was allowed to pick a student from each grade, and they were able to select a friend. Officer Shane Grammer of the Litchfield Police Department and Dr. Greg Fuerstenau, superintendent, also agreed to participate.

Also participating in the celebratory event were in sixth grade, Mrs. Ruschhaupt, Casson Schmidt, Bently Ronco and Caleb Coulter; in seventh grade, Mrs. Eldred, Kalie Kircher, Kale Dexheimer, Mr. Stewart and Mr. Baugher; in eighth grade, Daphney Hartel, Brayden Ronco, Alex Gasperson, Caiden Lamb, Kaiden Bergman and Derek Sawyer; as well as Mr. Henley.
