This March, the entire Stewart School community united in honor of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and collectively raised $23,840.58 for the organization’s Hero Squad campaign. Stewart has supported this initiative, which was known as Pennies for Patients prior to this year, since 2009 with a total of almost $190,000 in donations.

Coordinated by teacher Brenda McCarthy, this year’s program encouraged students to fundraise through chores and creative endeavors. They did work around the house; shoveled snow; sold refreshments; made and sold jewelry, crafts and artwork; set up photo shoots and took on jobs as mother’s helpers. They spread the word to friends and family members for additional contributions. Fifth grade student ambassadors assisted Ms. McCarthy by hanging posters, distributing materials, sharing morning announcements, visiting classrooms to present the campaign and brainstorm fundraising ideas.

The project concluded with a “Pie the Principals” event on March 25, facilitated by Ms. McCarthy and student ambassadors and starring Principal Linda Norton and Assistant Principal Keri Hand. The top earning classes from each grade had the opportunity to toss whipped cream pies at their building leaders, who wore protective suits and caps. The winners were Destiny Braddick’s fifth class with a donation of $2,374.42, Kelly Donnelly’s fourth grade class with a $1,187.85 contribution, Marissa Moscato and Jacob Boulay’s class with $1,562.11 in proceeds and Christine Becconsall’s second grade class, which garnered $796.11. Runner ups Amber Degnan and Corina Tesoriero’s class, Kevin Dolan’s class, Elizabeth Wills’ class and Melissa Coyne’s class were also invited to try out their pie throwing skills.

Stewart School has a strong passion for service learning. Students and staff members began their initial efforts for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to honor a student who had been diagnosed with blood cancer and have continued to honor more students who also battled cancer. Families also participate in “Pizza with a Purpose,” which donates the profits from pizza orders to different charities. For the month of March, the monies went to LLS as part of the Hero Squad campaign.

“We hope you continue to do service work,” Ms. Norton told the students. “Find a passion that will make a difference in this world, because the ability to do so is in all of you.”
