Emporium Pies has had its eye on Fort Worth for at least a couple of years now. Late last year, it seemed the popular Dallas pie shop was interested in downtown, perhaps around the Sundance Square area. But now, Emporium Pies is officially headed to the Near Southside — specifically, at 411 S. Main St., Ste. 121, right in the heart of one of the city's buzziest districts.
Founder Megan Wilkes says she hesitates to pencil in an exact opening date at this time, but she expects to be slinging slices of pie in Fort Worth by mid-April.
"We like to go into places where we feel like we're going to fit really well and mesh with the other people who are there. We didn't want to come into a place that already has a heavy dessert scene," Wilkes says. "This turned out to be the exact size and shape that we needed, with a landlord that was willing to work with us quickly."
Emporium Pies is taking the approximately 1,200-square-foot space previously occupied by gift shop Winton and Waits, which is moving to a larger space next door. Upon opening, the pie shop will begin serving pies out of a walk-up window while construction finishes on the interior. Once interior construction is complete, Wilkes says Fort Worth will have a slightly bigger dining room than Emporium Pies' other locations. She hopes to be fully open by the summer.
The menu will carry mostly the same offerings found at Emporium Pies' other shops, along with seasonal specials. Fan favorites include the Smooth Operator, a French silk chocolate pie made with a pretzel crust, and Dr. Love, a red velvet chess pie.
Emporium Pies gave South Main-ers an early taste of its offerings last Sunday (appropriately, on Pi Day, March 14), serving slices out of its pie truck, "Bessie," in front of the future location.
Wilkes says she intends to open at least one more shop in Fort Worth in the future. But for now, she's savoring South Main.
"We're really excited to come [to Fort Worth]; we have a lot of fans out there," she says. "Fort Worth has a really vibrant food scene, and we're excited to be a part of it."
