So simple and yet, so viral.
A new trend has recently taken over TikTok, and it’s unexpectedly straightforward: baked feta with tomatoes, twirled into pasta.
The viral recipe, which appears to date back to a 2019 video by Finnish food blogger Jenni Häyrinen, involves plopping tomatoes seasoned with olive oil, salt and pepper in a baking dish with a full block of feta cheese in the middle, covering it and cooking it until the feta melts. Next, add garlic, basil, red-pepper flakes, mix it with pasta and voila — you’ve baked TikTok’s hottest new trend.
Google searches for the savory cheesy dish, known as “uunifetapasta” in Finnish, have skyrocketed over the past few days as more and more food hounds try out the delicacy for themselves.
“Right away, it started to go viral first on Instagram stories,” Häyrinen told Food52 via email. “The next weekend I had a 3-day #uunifetapasta live on my Instagram stories, and reposted my followers’ creations. Newspapers picked up on it, and it was not long before everybody in Finland was cooking it.”
The dish has been such a hit in Finland that it’s become a running reference in the TikTok videos, not to mention that Finnish grocery stores are selling out of a feta as a result of the craze.
While the network has inspired countless less than tasty and downright dangerous trends over the years, People magazine reporter Shay Spence says this one is actually quite good.
The recipe “is just as easy to make as it looks,” he wrote, noting “the feta is indeed very strong with this one. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t delicious — just that I think it’s more suited as a side dish for a protein like chicken than as an entire meal on its own.”

He recommends shelling out for a higher quality feta, as it’s the main source of flavor in the dish, adding some extra seasoning including lemon zest and dried oregano, and remembering to save your pasta water.
“It’s very simple to make but also has a visually intriguing process, plus it features ingredients we’re familiar with — pasta, tomatoes and cheese are not exactly a groundbreaking combination — but with the twist of using sharp, tangy feta as opposed to, say, Parmesan,” he wrote.
For those who, for whatever reason, aren’t feeling feta, countless other cheeses can be easily swapped in for it, with the bonus incentive of possible viral spin-off fame. One spin-off vegan version has more than 72,000 likes on TikTok.
All-things-goopy expert Gwyneth Paltrow and her brand also gave the trend a whirl, opting for sheep’s milk feta and “grain-free almond flour pasta,” naturally.
