CORAL SPRINGS, FL – Knowing her elementary school students are struggling to stay focused during the pandemic, a Coral Springs teacher came up with an idea: she’ll take a pie in the face if they meet their math goals.
And so, last month, Maggie Martin, a fifth-grade math teacher at Westchester Elementary School, delivered on her promise when her class mastering fractions, long-division, elementary geometry, decimals, and other math lessons.
With a third of her 50 students standing in front of her outside the school and the rest watching from their home computers, she closed her eyes, shouted “I love math,” and got hit in the face with a graham-cracker crusted pie filled with whipped cream.
Her colleague, Gabriella Weston, a social studies and English teacher, smashed the pie across Martin’s nose, eyes, forehead, and hair.
“She really got into it,” Martin said, laughing. “It was cold.”
The pie-in-the-face happened after Martin’s class reached 50,000 points on the Imagine Math software.
Martin had promised her students if they achieved that milestone she would reward them by taking a pie in her face.
“They loved it,” she said.
It’s been a hard year for her students during Covid-19, she said. They needed a good laugh.
“They are losing out on so much,” she said. “They can’t do safety patrols or student government. They can’t have honor roll breakfasts.”
But this may not be the last pie-in-face at Westchester Elementary this year.
Martin’s colleague, Weston, has also set a goal for her students to reach a reading level as a class.
If they do, Weston will take a pie in the face. And yes, it will be Martin who delivers the blow.
“Payback is coming!” Martin said.
