The Pie Box
A retail spot for The Pie Box bakery opened Nov. 16 at 904 N. Main St., Ste. 400, in Nixa. It originated in 2008 as a sister venture of catering company Dining by Design, said Ryan Tiller, who owns both businesses. He said The Pie Box most recently operated out of Springfield kitchen spaces Dining by Design leases from O’Reilly Automotive Inc., Kraft Heinz Food Co. and Expedia Inc. The bakery’s new 3,800-square-foot shop fills carryout orders, Tiller said, noting The Pie Box only had delivery service after its Springfield store closed in 2013. The shop also offers a fourth kitchen for catering through Dining by Design, he said, adding a Little Caesars restaurant formerly filled the space. He declined to disclose renovation and relocation costs or lease terms. The Pie Box sells custom pies, cakes, cheesecakes, cookies and bars. Prices for pies are roughly $18-$20, with flavors such as peanut butter mocha, caramel apple and strawberry rhubarb, according to its website. Cakes and cheesecakes start at $32.

PKD Venue
A Republic couple entered the restaurant industry with the Feb. 8 launch of PKD Venue at 7330 W. Farm Road 170. Husband-and-wife owners Javier and Michelle Romero began the three-employee Republic eatery following last August’s start of their event venue of the same name within the space. The restaurant’s menu is a blend of cuisines, Michelle Romero said, noting she is Italian, and her husband is Mexican. Options include street tacos, tamales, breakfast burritos and Italian subs, along with such breakfast staples as waffles, and biscuits and gravy. Most items are priced under $10. She said the couple wanted to make use of available commercial kitchen space in the building in addition to hosting community events. The Romeros are on a three-year lease with Mike and Janis McGill for an undisclosed rate. Startup costs were around $10,000, Michelle Romero said, adding J&M BBQ and Custom Catering formerly filled the space. The couple also own construction company Perfect Kitchen Design LLC, which inspired PKD Venue’s name.

Ozarx Botanicals
West Springfield gained a medical marijuana dispensary with the Jan. 30 opening of Ozark Botanicals I LLC. The 2,500-square foot shop is at 3800 W. Sunshine St., Ste. 100, in Springfield Plaza. Kim Andrews, general manager and investor with Ozarx Botanicals, declined to disclose startup costs or the six-year lease rate with Rankin Development LLC. She said Stinson Building Co. handled infill. The 12-employee dispensary sells cannabis flower, pre-rolled joints and marijuana-infused products, such as edibles and drinks. Andrews said product availability currently is limited as dispensaries await more cultivators and manufacturers to open in the state. Ozarx Botanicals is the second dispensary to open in Springfield, following the November launch of Old Route 66 Wellness on North Glenstone Avenue.
