GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Orchard Mesa Baptist Church had their annual chili cook-off and pie auction planned for Saturday afternoon. However, COVID-19 restrictions forced the church to postpone the fundraiser.
The church hopes to postpone their auction until restrictions are lifted, which would allow more people to participate in the event. They are still accepting donations for charitable causes, including Grant-a-Wish, a non-profit which provides for children in need across the valley. The auction also usually helps raise money for the church’s local food pantry, which serves anyone in the community who needs it.
The money raised in Orchard Mesa Baptist Church’s annual pie auction is specifically used to buy food for the pantry, which is open on the second and fourth Friday of each month.
“We have a real auctioneer who auctions off each pie,” explains Reverend Robert Babcox, the church’s senior pastor. “We did a fundraiser back in early March, before the restrictions went into place. One particular pie brought in 400 dollars –– that must have been one good pie!”
Even with Mesa County moving into orange level restrictions on Monday, the church says not enough people would have been allowed in the building to hold a fair and equitable auction. Orchard Mesa Baptist Church still plans on organizing their auction and chili cook-off once it is safe to hold the event.
