CENTREVILLE — Owners of the recently opened Annapolis shop, Dangerously Delicious Pies, Chris and Kim Miller are also Centreville residents and have of this month started offering their wares during the weekly Kent Island Farmers Market at Cult Classic Brewery in Stevensville. This pie company is not what most people think of when it comes to pies. Yes, they do make a variety of “sweet pies”, including apple, pumpkin, and berry pies, however, but their specialty is a savory variety of meat pies and quiche.
The Miller’s opened their Annapolis location this past November. Chris said, “We got started as Thanksgiving was approaching, and dove head-first into the business — off the deep-end.” In an Annapolis podcast interview, he told the reporter, “We’ve been ridiculously successful thus far. We’ve had difficulty keeping up with production with high demand for our product.”
Dangerously Delicious Pies was founded by Rodney “The Pie Man” Henry in 1999 in Baltimore City, at its Canton location. Since then, Henry has expanded to three locations in Washington, D.C., and sold the Canton location to John and Mary Wortman, who have opened another Baltimore location in Hampden.
Henry learned to bake pies from his grandmother while a child growing up in Pike Township, Marion County, Indiana. In adulthood, he became the front man for the Baltimore band “Glenmont Popes”. He developed the pie business during “music downtime’s” to support himself. Chris Miller worked for 20-years in promoting the music industry, before deciding to go into a business of his own with his wife, Kim. Growing up in the Washington D.C.-Baltimore area all their lives, they have resided in Centreville since 2007, where they have raised their two sons. Kim actually grew up in the Mid-Shore area, attending schools in Easton.
The Miller’s love their Annapolis location which Chris describes is “in the arts community of West Street”. Their location is very near Annapolis favorites, Miss Shirley’s Restaurant, Rams Head Annapolis, and Maryland Hall.
Dangerously Delicious Pies offerings include: savory meat pies — Chicken Pot Pie, Steak Mushroom Onion & Gruyere Pie, Pork BBQ Pie, Ratatouille (vegan) Pie, Polka Pie, and the Crab Supreme, to mention just a few. Quiche varieties include: the Cowboy (ham and bacon), Cowgirl (vegetarian), Crab & Cheddar Cheese, Broccoli & Cheddar (vegan), and Spinach Goat Cheese (vegan), among others.
Sweet pies include: varieties of peach, apple, and mixed berry pies; and banana, chocolate and coconut cream pies. The list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Miller’s “specialty pies”, among which are their Pineapple Right Side Up, and Baltimore Bomb (loaded with famed crushed Baltimore Berger Cookies), and seasonal pumpkin and pecan pies. There are also “Chess Pies” and award winning “Pancake Pies” offered. All of the pies (meat, quiche or sweet), are advertised as “The Best Pies in America,” but feel free to judge for yourself!
In January, Chris expanded to bringing his product to the Kent Island Farmers Market, open every Thursday afternoon, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Every week since, there has been a steady line of people carrying the meat and quiche pies to their cars. People have heard about Dangerously Delicious Pies, and they’re apparently willing to give it a taste. Debbie Evans of Chester stopped by after hearing the pies were being sold there. She purchased a Chicken Pot Pie and after taking it home to warm up for dinner, posted a photo of the half eaten pie from her dining table, captioned “It was fantastic!”. She added, “If someone hadn’t told me about it, I’d never have known!” All meat pies sell for $35 each. All pies are pre-cooked. Directions to warm them are provided with each boxed pie.
Miller is already looking ahead. He’s looked for possible locations to expand on the Eastern Shore. He said, “I’ve been looking for possible locations in the Easton area for a couple years. Yes, it’s the next step for us. We’re always looking to meet demand.” He’s also considered eventually having an enclosed pie truck, but that’s a long-term goal. He is in negotiations with local businesses on the Eastern Shore to carry his product here. “We’re very near having an agreement,” Miller said. “It’ll be soon!”
