Pie ‘n Burger has been around since 1964, positively ancient in local terms, a monument to the pleasures of…burgers and pies.
Long before Johnny Rocket’s and Cafe ’50s were busy playing at retro dining, Pie ‘n Burger was doing the real thing. Rather than pretending to serve ’50s food, they offer it as they always have, doing a far better job than most of the nostalgia wannabes. They make, for instance, a Swiss cheese on rye that brings back more memories than Proust’s Madeleine cookie; one bite, and I was a kid again, making occasional appearances on “The Pinky Lee Show” (who rewarded me for my dancing with a pair of Pinky Lee taps that I still have to this very day).
There’s also a proper French dip sandwich, one of the best chicken pot pies in town, a classic macaroni salad…and, of course, there are burgers and pies. The burgers are prepared in the classic manner, topped with dressing, onions, lettuce and tomato, American cheese and chili if you wish — the quintessence of the California burger, served well-dressed in a paper wrapper in order to hold the whole thing together.
Pie for dessert is de rigueur — the lemon meringue, rhubarb, Dutch apple, pumpkin and strawberry in particular. The malts and shakes are so thick the straw stands at attention in them. This is a great place to show the kids how mom and dad grew up.
