It goes without saying that the breadsticks at Olive Garden are where it's at. While the restaurant's specialty is intended to be pasta, it's not surprising that many people go there just to have breadsticks and salad which, for some reason, taste heavenly together. Olive Garden is good, affordable compared to many Italian restaurants, and offers comfort food in spades. After all, who doesn't love an appetizer that's basically a fried pasta dish? Many people also enjoy their lighter fare, such as the forever-hailed-as-the-greatest Zuppa Toscana, while others opt for the desserts that are unique, yet still comforting.
For Olive Garden fans, however, one thing rings true: Not every pasta dish is created equally. While a majority of the pasta on the menu is delicious, there are still just some dishes that don't quite hit the mark in terms of flavor and balance. Far be it for anyone to downplay a pasta dish from the reigning champion of Italian chain restaurants, but someone has to do it... starting with these.
Braised Beef Bolognese
Luckily, the 'worst' pasta dish at Olive Garden is no longer on the menu (not on most menus, anyway) which is probably a relief to some. This dish didn't get stellar reviews from most who tried it and the quality of the beef was sub-par compared to the rest of the menu. We can't imagine that beef would have been a huge hit at a restaurant like Olive Garden anyway, especially when most people are going for that cheesy, alfredo, tomato-y goodness.
Chicken & Shrimp Carbonara
Carbonara, admittedly, is a fairly easy dish to go about making. With a minimal list of ingredients and few ways to actually make it incorrectly, the worst thing that can happen is that the eggs in the sauce become scrambled rather than warmed and gently cooked as a sauce. The chicken and shrimp carbonara is okay, but that's about where it stops - not the worst and not the best.
Eggplant Parmigiana
Olive Garden's eggplant parmigiana gets points for being slightly above average but when it comes to a parmigiana, it's the personal touches that make it what it is. Compared to a small, family-owned restaurant, for example, it couldn't even compare. If you're comparing it to an average recipe, of course, it'll stand out. This one fell more under a 'personal preference' than anything else, but it's pretty generic.
Five Cheese Ziti al Forno
There's plenty to say about the five cheese Ziti al Forno, but none of it would put it over the edge of 'absolutely stellar.' The dish is good and each of the five kinds of cheese definitely adds some depth and extra flavor, but it also makes the dish overtly heavy - alas, isn't that what one desires from a whopping plate full of ziti, though? The jury is still somewhat out on this one, but it's not a fan favorite.
Ravioli di Portobello
There's something about the ravioli at Olive Garden that people really dig. When mixed with the perfect blend of portobello mushrooms, this dish definitely shines in its own way. The only problem is that if you're not a fan of the meaty mushroom, there's no way this is going to play on any of your flavor strings. Overall, it's a really great option for veggie lovers.
Shrimp Alfredo
The alfredo at Olive Garden is so good that it has even acquired its own spot on the menu. While there is a myriad of different alfredo dishes, not including the 'create your own' pasta option, the shrimp alfredo stands out with its lightness, creamy texture, and overall freshness. The flavor is spot-on and the dish, as a whole, is a winner in terms of comfort food and definitive alfredo rankings.
Lasagna Frittata
While this is one of the most unhealthy appetizers one can order at a chain restaurant, that doesn't mean it's not astoundingly delicious. What's not to love about fried lasagna? The answer is 'absolutely nothing.' This dish is genuinely tasty and not just in an unhealthy way; the sauce is flavorful, the lasagna itself is never cooked past the point of well-done, and the cheesy interior is the perfect cherry - or pecorino - on top.
Tour Of Italy
It's not all that much of a surprise that the Tour of Italy is by far the most popular, and most beloved, item on the menu in terms of entrees. While it's not solely a pasta dish, it still contains a pasta dish, making it count toward one of the best pasta dishes on the entire menu. This is actually a really great way to try some other fan favorites as well, all for a price that actually makes sense.
