Editor's note: This feature story is one of many that will run in The Pioneer this week in anticipation of Small Business Saturday.

BIG RAPIDS — Although The Pie wHole will not be open for walk-in orders on Small Business Saturday, bakery owner Niki Stricker will still be hard at work on cakes, cookies and more this weekend.

Stricker said while they are normally open for Small Business Saturday, they decided they would not be this year due to a decrease in foot traffic with the continued COVID-19 pandemic.

However, she said people are encouraged to place their orders for sweet treats early so she can get started ahead of time.

Stricker added gift certificates and a few of their smaller items are particularly popular around the holidays.

"The hot cocoa bombs are really big this time of year," she said.

Stricker said she hopes anyone who is able tries to support locally-owned businesses this year to help them stay afloat.

"The box stores have a surplus of backers and savings accounts that small businesses don't necessarily have access to," she said. "With such a decline in patronage in many of the businesses this year, that hurts us. If you want to shop your favorite small businesses next year, you need to support them this year."

Stricker said with all of the great small businesses in Big Rapids, there are many options for holiday shopping this year.

"I like the fact that we have so many artisans and small businesses in this area. I don't have to get a generic gift," she said.

Stricker said she has loved owning and operating the bakery in Big Rapids for the past five years, and appreciates all the support she has received throughout the years, including from her mother, Doni Cassidy, and daughter, Maddy Stricker.

"My mom is in here every single day sacrificing her time to help me. She works a full time job but without her I couldn't do this," she said.

As she continues to make desserts for people's birthdays, weddings and other special celebrations, Stricker said she always loves to hear stories from others and share her own.

"To have all the community ties I have, partly because of my mom, that's pretty cool," she said.
