When Jeanette Glass took over the Royal China company, Country Harvest became known as the “All American Pie Series,” which was sold from 1980-89. Plates in the Country Harvest series by Royal China by Jeanette are Apple, Cheese Cake, Cherry, Pecan, Blueberry, Lemon Meringue, Quiche Lorraine and more.
Also in the Country Harvest collection are the Currier and Ives Brown Farm Scene and Currier and Ives Snowy Carriage Ride. I acquired my pieces of Currier and Ives from my mother when they were given as premiums at the local grocery store. Various pie plate dishes were also sold at the local five-and-dime stores.
“I actually donated all the Watkins pie plates, but I do have a couple Currier and Ives in the blue and also brown — fine collectibles," said Neil Hunt, of A-Z Collectibles in Winona.
The plates usually sell for $10-$20 on selling sites and at antique malls.
There is something about serving a pie baked in a Royal China by Jeanette or Watkins pie dish, because when you take a slice of pie, you can see the recipe underneath. They are also a sturdy plate, and usually not chipped or cracked when found at thrift stores, flea markets or antique malls.
“Many cooks find it frustrating when they want to make a particular food and cannot find the recipe! Maybe they forgot which cookbook it's in, or maybe the index card is lost — either way, it's annoying," said Brenda Jannsen, of Treasures Under Sugar Loaf in Winona. "No worries about that with a recipe pie plate! One can pull out the plate and immediately start the process of making delicious creations! Our plates sell $5-$20 each.”
When you come across a recipe pie plate, take a look at the back stamp, as it will say“Distributed by Watkins” or “Royal China by Jeannette.”
Sarah Kieffer, of Sarah's Uniques and Jim's “Man”tiques in St. Charles, primarily has Watkins-brand pie dishes with the recipe in the middle.
"I do have other styles as well, but Watkins is the main plate, as folks can relate to the Watkins product name. My pie plates are between $8-$15, and are fun to collect, and of course very usable!”
Another company that introduced a pie plate with a recipe is Louisville Stoneware.
Vendor Riha Timbers, a vendor at Old River Valley Antique Mall in Stewartville, said, “At my house, we are excited for orchard-fresh apple goodness, and speaking of which, baking in Louisville Stoneware pie plates that I have available in my booth of apple and cherry, selling for $12. Very popular, so call first as they may have sold!”
Reproductions of these recipe pie plates are being sold at Pier 1, Joann Fabrics, and through the Lakeside Collection or LTD catalogs. You can even order a personalized ceramic pie pan with your loved one's handwriting that can be passed down from generation to generation through Etsy sellers.
