'Pie it forward’: How to donate pies to students from Syracuse city schools this Thanksgiving - syracuse.com

The Sweet Praxis and Syracuse City School District are teaming up to spread holiday cheer to families this Thanksgiving.

Now through Thursday, Nov. 19, The Sweet Praxis is accepting pie donations for SCSD families as part of a “pie it forward” effort. The bakery started taking donations last week and has already tallied 70 pie orders.

Owners Natalie Evans and Jennifer Walls launched the Sweet Praxis in May 2011, selling their sweet treats at the CNY Regional Market, festivals and local pop-up shops before opening their 1,400-square-foot cafe in 2016 in the historic Grange Building, at the northeast corner of East Water and South Warren streets in downtown Syracuse.

“With our four-year anniversary, we were thinking we have a lot to be grateful for, it would be nice if we could come up with some way to pay it forward,” Walls said this week about the Thanksgiving project.

After coming up with the idea, the bakery started working with the school district, which helped organize plans like securing volunteers to pick up pies from the store. Donated pies will be delivered to designated families on Tuesday, Nov. 24.

Donations are flexible, and customers can either buy a pie or donate any dollar amount that will go toward the cost of a pie. Those who donate receive a treat box filled with Pop-tart-style hand pies in return, featuring flavors like pumpkin and apple.

The pies donated to students' families will be the Sweet Praxis’s classic pumpkin pie recipe. Walls and Evans worked together to create a recipe in their bake lab that had the perfect texture, sweetness and spice.

“We’d kind of blend the best of them,” Walls said. “Using our culinary brains we would kind of combine the attributes of things we liked and test it again.”

With the donation deadline approaching, Walls said her team is ready to get baking and could make about 400 pies if that many donations came in.

“Our team is really awesome and they’re just pumped — anyway we can — to help, especially this year,” Walls said.
