There’s a sense of comfort in a slice of pie.
Especially Rose McGee’s sweet potato pie.
Just in time for Thanksgiving dinner, the Golden Valley woman– and her pies — will be featured on the “Rachael Ray” show at 11 a.m. Wednesday on KARE TV.
McGee will appear in part of a segment called “Thanks-For-Giving,” a chance for Ray to honor people who make a difference in their communities.
That’s certainly true of McGee, who in a taped segment told Ray that she brought the pies to Ferguson, Missouri, after the killing of Michael Brown in 2014 as her way of comforting the community. More recently, she told Ray, she baked the pies to comfort her own community after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.
The comforting pie is an adaptation of her grandmother’s recipe. But the family recipe has grown way beyond the pie plate: The dessert is now the centerpiece of McGee’s nonprofit, Sweet Potato Comfort Pie.
She’s now a “bake-tivist.”
“When I give the pie to people, there’s this energy that makes everyone feel more comfortable, and more calm,” McGee told Ray in the segment. “The essence of what we do is bringing people together to have conversations — tough conversations. The pie is a catalyst for caring and building community.”
McGee said her goal is to “carry that taste of comfort” to as many people as she can.
“Rose, that is so beautiful,” Ray said. “I’m crying happy tears.”
She then surprise McGee with a $5,000 donation courtesy of Reddi-wip for her nonprofit.
The segment ends with both of the women in tears.
“Happy tears,” Ray said.
