Who didn’t gain a new culinary skill or two during those months of lockdown? If you started hand-making pasta this year (or you’d like to give it a go), we’ve partnered with a number of suppliers that can help you take your spaghetti, ravioli or cavatelli game to the next level.
Cookbook author Elizabeth Hewson – whose debut Saturday Night Pasta was released last week – has phoned in some industry friends and curated a DIY pasta set with topnotch ingredients and equipment, all of which she uses herself. The pack is worth almost $900.
The kit comes with an Italian-manufactured pasta maker from Marcato that makes 16 shapes; a ridged pasta board and fluted pastry wheel from Warwick Backhouse; a copy of Saturday Night Pasta, plus a branded tee and hessian tool bag. There's also extra-virgin olive oil, passata, Ortiz anchovies, a wedge of Parmigiano Reggiano and more ingredients from premium providore Simon Johnson. In addition, there's high-quality sea-salt flakes and fine salt from Olsson’s; 20 kilograms each of 00 and semolina flour; two bottles of wine from Drnks, which you can sip from the two Riedel syrah wine glasses also in the pack; and a soft linen apron from In Bed.
In need of pasta inspiration? Follow Hewson’s Instagram, which will guide you though shapes, tips, techniques and recipes to make with all your fancy new bits and pieces. It'll also show you how you can partake in Saturday Night Pasta sessions at your own home. As well as being the name of her book, it's a ritual Hewson created to combat her anxiety.
“Making something from scratch and enjoying it proved to be a reaffirming, soul-restoring experience,” says Hewson, who is also the marketing and brand manager for one of Australia’s leading restaurant groups, Sydney’s Fink Group (Bennelong, Quay, Firedoor). “It gave me a new brightness … I felt good. I had switched off. I was calm.”
