A strip steak bonanza raffle being cooked up by two local charities could save someone the trouble of grocery shopping during a pandemic, as well as help less fortunate local families.
Woman’s Life Chapter 911-Macomb Angels and Neighbors United will host a New York Strip Steak Bonanza Raffle fundraiser for their organizations on Oct. 24.
“We will be holding live and virtual, at Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea,” said Woman’s Life Chapter 911-Macomb Angels President Lynn Karnes.
Sweetwaters Coffee and Tea is at 44560 Garfield Road in Clinton Township. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the raffle starts at 5 p.m. Seating is limited.
Karnes said this is the first steak raffle for the chapter, which has hosted several meat raffle benefits in prior years, and even managed to put on some virtually despite the onset of COVID-19.
“We have done a few virtual raffles since COVID-19. In March we held a pierogi raffle and partnered with Compassion Pregnancy three days after the shutdown,” Karnes said.
For the Oct. 24 raffle, Neighbors United and Woman’s Life Chapter -911 Macomb Angels secured sponsorships to cover the cost of 100, 10 to 12-ounce New York strip steaks from Nitsches Meats and Deli in Shelby Township.
“Nitsches is the only place I buy our meat for our raffles, family owned and delicious,” Karnes said.
All chances purchased go into a bucket or drum, and 10 tickets are pulled out at a time until 100 winners are selected.
“The winners that are in person will take their winnings home with them,” Karnes said.
Those who are not present can pick up their winnings on Oct. 25 at Double Dippers Ashby’s Ice Cream, 46540 Van Dyke Ave., Shelby Township.
The New York Strip Steak Bonanza will also include additional raffles. A 50/50 raffle has tickets for sale at $1 each. Tickets can be purchased by the same methods as for the steak raffle. All tickets will be put into a bucket and one will be drawn to win half. A lottery board offers one ticket for $5 or three tickets for $10. Tickets can be purchased by the same methods as for the steak raffle. All tickets purchased go into a bucket, with one ticket pulled to win the lottery board.
“Instant lottery board is a poster board filled with $100 in instant lottery tickets,” Karnes said.
Woman’s Life Chapter 911-Macomb Angels is part of Woman’s Life Insurance Society, based in Port Huron. It is designed to connect financial security to women and families. Karnes founded Chapter 911-Macomb Angels in 2015, and currently has about 84 members that volunteer for a variety of causes.
The organization began a community hygiene pantry at 48542 Van Dyke Ave., Suite 1B in Shelby Township this year, which serves Macomb County residents. Those in need can visit once every other month to receive toiletries such as soap. The pantry is open on the second and fourth Mondays of a month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on the third Saturday of a month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., or by appointment.
Macomb Township firefighter Joseph Warne founded Neighbors United with the goal of assisting individuals and families in need on an individual basis. The non-profit assists causes such as families in need and firefighters with cancer.
“Woman's Life Chapter 911 partnered with Neighbors United last year for a meat raffle in Fraser and Joe has the same goals that I do- when it comes to doing as much as we can to help as many people as we can. We selected to partner with him again this year because of his dedication and his mission to not judge anyone,” Karnes said.
There is no admission price for the event, but participants pay $10 for 50 chances to win or $20 for 150 chances to win. Those who registered and paid by early October received 25 additional chances. Registration is currently open and continues through Oct. 24.
