Local STEAK ‘N SHAKE fans will get to try the chain’s new counter service format today with the reopening of the dining room at the 3184 S. Dirksen Parkway restaurant.

The dining room at that location reopens at 10 a.m. today after a week of drive-through service only while interior renovations were underway.

The construction work — which included the addition of a self-serve drink station — was needed to meet new corporate requirements that convert founder Gus Belt’s brand from a full-service establishment to one where patrons place their orders at a front counter and seat themselves.

The location is the first in a wave of construction upgrades for Springfield franchise operator STULLER INC. The expected timeline has stores closing dine-in service only on the specified Monday and reopening the following Friday morning with the new counter service format in place.

The dining room for the Steak ‘N Shake in Taylorville is scheduled to close for renovations Oct. 5; Jacksonville, Oct. 12; 2465 N. Dirksen Parkway, Oct. 19; and 1580 Wabash Ave., Oct. 26.

Stuller Inc. already upgraded the Prairie Crossing Steak ‘N Shake facility this spring during the statewide dine-in ban. However, the local franchise operator had not intended to convert its other restaurants until the corporate mandate came down this fall.

Other corporate mandates include eliminating breakfast hours and paring down the menu.

Nancy’s Pizza to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

NANCY’S PIZZA is bringing back its "pink drinks" for October to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

A percentage of sales from Warrior Margaritas or a glass of rose will go to local nonprofits.

Proceeds from the Springfield restaurant at 3201 Monroe St. will go to the Land of Lincoln Pink Warriors, a new not-for-profit whose goal is to empower Sangamon County breast cancer programs, services and patients through funding and awareness. The Montgomery County Breast Cancer Support Group will receive funds raised at the Litchfield location.

The A La Carte column highlights restaurant openings, closing, renovations and relocations, as well as personnel changes and business news. Natalie Morris can be reached at 737-7254 or by email at natalie.sjr@gmail.com.
