What’s new and notable on the San Fernando Valley dining scene:
Bread & Breakfast
Serving just what the name promises, Bread & Breakfast is a weekend mornings-only stand for breakfast burritos and, of all things, tacos stuffed with Armenian basturma and soujouk. Which is about as much of an ethnic carom shot as can be rationally imagined. Grab and go only.

Curry Time Indian Express
An Indian fast-fooder with a second branch in El Monte, Curry Time Indian Express serves all the spicy and spicier dishes we’ve come to know and love. After lamenting that it sure is too spicy, we still eat every bite.

Bite Me Hot Dogs
We do love our hot dog stands here in SoCal. And we especially like them if the dogs come in a multitude of meats (pastrami dog! Turkey bacon dog!) with a panoply of toppings (Cheetos and Dorito crumbles!). At Bite Me Hot Dogs in North Hollywood, they’re served till 10 every night. Like they say, “bite me!”

Don Chon Menudo
Menudo — an obsessive stew of inner parts and more parts — is one of those love ’em or hate ’em dishes. Luckily, I love ’em. And at Don Chon Menudo in Pacoima, they do them as well as any I’ve had south of the border, reminding me of the ubiquitous sign in restaurant windows in Mexico: “Exquisito Menudo.” Though down there, it’s served mostly on weekends — as a legendary hangover cure.

My diet and me
Food writers are, more or less, normal folks. Which is to say, I put on my pants one leg at a time. And a bag of Wise brand potato chips (the ones I grew up with!), with some Lipton’s Onion Dip, makes me a very happy camper.
But then, every now and then, and more than that these days of hunkering down at home, I notice my Levi’s getting kind of, you know, tight. And I know it’s time for me to cut back, at least a bit, so when the world finally reopens, I can enjoy the sundry pleasures of a nice juicy ribeye.
My diet tricks certainly do cause my daughter much amusement. One is my penchant for Diet Jell-O mixed in a NutriBullet with…celery. I can’t remember how exactly I came up with this peculiar mixture as a late-night treat. But, it’s sweet and I guess almost good for me. And it saves me from the temptations of the many containers of ice cream my wife and daughter keep in the freezer. With a touch of fortitude, for I sure do like coffee-flavored ice cream. But still…
And speaking of coffee, I’ve been avoiding the cream and sugar — and replaced them with Coco Creamer from Trader Joe’s and Sweet’N Low. My wife points out that Sweet’N Low is arguably poison. I show her a recent photo taken of us at a wedding — where I look like Mr. Creosote from “Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life.”
It’s not much of a diet, but it beats the Beverly Hills Diet I tried years ago, where I ate nothing but pineapple one day, and nothing but watermelon another. You lost weight. You also lost your mind.
