KINDE — The North Huron Parent Group held its third annual apple pie fundraiser, with the help of A Piece of the Pie Company, offering homemade apple pies made with Michigan apples.
This year, the parent group was able to sell 850 pies through the fundraiser. According to Lisa Szymanski, member of the North Huron Parent Group and event coordinator for the apple pie fundraiser, they will be making 950 pies in total Saturday Oct. 17 and will have extra for sale.
Apple pies from the fundraiser will be sold at Kohl Farm’s corn maze in Unionville on Saturday Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and during the Pumpkin Palooza in Port Austin, also on Saturday Oct. 24, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The North Huron Parent Group usually holds a bake sale during the school’s Christmas Concert. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, it is unsure whether they would be allowed to do so this year. To make up for the lost fundraising opportunity, the group recently decided they will be selling Warrior branded coffee before Christmas.
Proceeds from the apple pie fundraiser will go toward after school activities, assemblies, and field trips.
“This year’s apple pie fundraiser will specifically fun a fifth-grade camping trip to Mystic Lake and a science guy presentation at the school,” Szymanski said. “It’s a great event because the community can see exactly where their money is going.”
During the first apple pie fundraiser, the parent group, along with many North Huron students, were able to make around 200 pies by hand. Since then the group has enlisted the help of A Piece of the Pie Company, a company near Grand Rapids owned by Katie Heffron, a friend of Szymanski.
A Piece of the Pie Company specifically helps organizations fundraise through making pies. The company provides the necessary machinery and supplies for the parent group to make their apple pies, saving both time and rolling pins.
Last year, with the help of the pie fundraising company, North Huron’s parent group was able to make over 400 pies in four days. This year, the group hoped to maintain those numbers with help from A Piece of the Pie Company and sugar donated by Michigan Sugar Company, the community came out in full support of the fundraiser resulting in almost double the previous year’s orders.
The fresh apple pies are made ready to be baked or frozen and are both dairy and egg free. According to the event flier, the pies can be baked within three days of purchase or frozen for up to six months.
The pies are also available for donation. The North Huron Parent Group takes pride in hand delivering pies purchased for donation to several local charities.
“We have many pies donated to the food bank that are then given to families during the holidays,” Szymanski said. “It’s a really great way to give to the school and the community.”
Szymanski added that the fundraiser will be strictly following food the food safety guidelines put in place for the coronavirus pandemic. Being an independent company, A Piece of the Pie Company is obligated to maintain recommended precautions, delivering fresh pies with the health and safety of customers as a top priority.
By utilizing space in North Huron’s cafeteria, the group will have no problem following social distancing requirements and other safety precautions.
All orders were due by Friday October 9 with pick-up on Saturday Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the school cafeteria. Any pies not picked up then will be available on Monday Oct. 19 in the Elementary Office.
According to Szymanski, if anyone is still interested in purchasing a pie but missed the deadline, they can contact her at 989-550-9006 or call the North Huron Elementary Office to inquire about one of the extra pies.
