WINONA – The Winona Ruritan Club held its annual steak fry for members and guests Aug. 25 at the Saxon Club two months later than normal. President Rob Doyle Jr. called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. And led the group in singing “America.” Vice President Homer Althouse gave the Invocation.
Club members Buster Rogowsky, John Heinbuck and Rob Doyle Jr. barbecued the tender loin steaks and chicken breasts that were purchased from club member Rob Donaldson’s Winona Frozen Foods. Side dishes of roasted red potatoes, green beans with ham, vegetable salad, dinner rolls with butter and ice cream sundaes were catered and served by members of the Giant Eagle Deli Department. A round of applause was given to the servers and cooks.
Secretary Lee Stamp called the roll of members who introduced their guests. Homer Althouse made a motion to dispense with secretary and treasurer monthly reports. In a normal year the club would award its college scholarships in June. This year the four recipients received their checks in the mail as some colleges were starting by Aug. 4 and 5. Jenna Althouse, granddaughter of club member Homer Althouse, was given the Howard and Myrtle Bailey Scholarship; Dylan Judy, son of member Scott Judy, was given the Winona Ruritan Club Scholarship; Ethan McDevitt, son of member Jason McDevitt, was given the Ruritan Build-Your-Dollar Scholarship; and Ethan Stamp, grandson of member John Stamp, was given the Elmer R. Stamp Scholarship. Secretary Lee Stamp read the Thank You notes from the awardees.
The club will not hold its Pancake and Sausage Breakfast in October. The club will be making and selling fresh scrapple Oct. 9 in a limited amount. The club will also be selling whole hog sausage, frozen in 1 pound packs. Contact any club member to place an order. The club will also be selling raffle tickets for a rifle and a pistol. The winner will get their choice and both must pass the federal background check. Club members Michael Knoedler is the committee chairman.
Everyone present sang “Happy Birthday” to Rob Doyle Jr., the only person in attendance born in August. He was also the only person celebrating a wedding anniversary in August.
The September dinner meeting is scheduled for Sept. 22 at the Winona Methodist Church.
No other business came before the club. Everyone rose and pledged their allegiance to the flag of the United States of America.
