UPTOWN — Jakes Pup In The Ruf in Uptown has been temporarily closed after it failed two inspections this month.
Jakes, 4401 N. Sheridan Rd., failed a health review Sept. 16 when inspectors found “15 live roaches” on the restaurant’s floors, walls and a sink, Chicago Department of Public Health records show.
The hot dog joint then failed a follow-up inspection Sept. 23. Health officials said the restaurant management had not done enough to remedy the pest problems and other violations found inside the business, according to city records.
Jakes management was told to consult with a pest control company and have the business treated, according to the most recent health inspection report.
Other code violations at the restaurant included a leaky sink repaired with duck tape, no thermometer inside the refrigeration unit and no “employees must wash hands” sign in the bathrooms.
Jakes must pass a health inspection before it can reopen. Management for the business could not be reached Monday.
Jakes Pup In The Ruf was opened in 1959 by CTA bus driver Jake Segal, and the business is now one of the oldest hot dog places in the city. The use of “Ruf” in the name is because Uptown “was a rough neighborhood, but I didn’t want to make it look bad,” Segal told DNAinfo Chicago.
Jakes was shuttered by the health department in 2013 who also found live roaches in the establishment. Inspectors also noted slime and dirt buildup “dripping into ice” inside an ice machine.
A note on the restaurant’s door Monday reads, “Closed for maintenance and cleaning. We will reopen soon!”
