Nearly canceled due to the novel Coronavirus pandemic, then postponed due to weather, the second annual “Doggin’ It for Jeff’ hot dog eating contest was held Saturday outside the White Buffalo in New Canaan.
Part of “The Hot Dog Challenge,” an effort among friends started five years ago to see who could eat the most hot dogs between Memorial Day and Independence Day, the overall challenge and the New Canaan contest raise money in the name of Jeff Cortese of Stamford, who lost his sight when he was in his 20s.
Beneficiaries are Leader Dogs for the Blind and the Neurology and Neurosurgery Division of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, both of which work with Cortese, who was diagnosed last year with glioblastoma.
With COVID-19 forcing social distancing, part of this year’s competition featured videos with a hot dog theme added to a famous show or movie, such as “Dog and Order” or a clip based on “The Shawshank Redemption.” Videos can be found at thehotdogchallenge.com.
Vinny Cortese won this year’s contest, finishing nine hot dogs in seven minutes.
