A story from 2018 about Costco’s CEO and the company’s co-founder went viral against this week, all because of what the story said about the price of the hot dog and soda combo.
Some context:
- Costco has a hot dog and soda combo that costs $1.50 for both items. It’s a steal. We know this.
- The price hasn’t been raised since it first arrived in stores in 1984.
What happened:
Mental Floss published a story back in 2018 that alleged current Costco president and CEO W. Craig Jelinek wanted to raise the price because the company kept losing money due to the special’s low price. So he suggested they raise the price.
Costco co-founder and former CEO Jim Sinegal had some words for Jelinek about the suggestion.
- “If you raise [the price of] the [expletive] hot dog, I will kill you,” Sinegal said, according to Mental Floss. “Figure it out.”
The end result:
Costco sold 151 million hotdog combos in 2019, which was good for $226.5 million, Fox Business reports.
