Labor Day is on the horizon.
For some, it marks the end of summer. Others consider it a day when grilling is mandatory. Both can be true. But just what are Americans going to grill?
To find out, the team at the food website Grill Cook Bake surveyed more than 3,900 Americans, asking them about their favorite grilled food, how they like their steak cooked, and if they prefer hamburgers or hot dogs.
“Warmer weather means it’s grilling season,” the site noted. “Whether it’s a charcoal grill or a gas grill, there’s nothing like firing it up and grilling up your favorite food. Whether it’s just for you, for your family, or a group (social distancing, of course), grilled food is a crowd pleaser.”
There were several interesting findings from the survey, but Michigan residents will want to note the surprising response to how a steak is cooked.
Medium well? We’re not so sure about that.
Look, everyone likes their steak cooked differently, but considering Michigan’s farming tradition and location in the Midwest, medium or medium rare would seem to be more popular. Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Indiana all preferred their steaks medium.
Nationwide, medium rare was the most common cooking preference (27.3%), followed by medium (25.6%) and medium well (23.5%). The results varied significantly by state.
Alarmingly, 19.4% of Americans prefer their steak well done. Four states had well done as their most common response (Alaska, Georgia, Oklahoma, West Virginia).
More than one third of Americans (34%) say steak is their favorite grilled food, followed by hamburgers (19%) and chicken (18%). Finally, 81% of Americans preferred hamburgers over hot dogs, according to the survey.
