Applefest pie auction underway - Fenton Tri County Times

arome.indah.link

It may not necessarily feel like Applefest week, however, work is going on behind the scenes to make this year’s annual fundraiser for St. John the Evangelical Catholic Church a memorable success.

The Applefest Core Committee has been working with its

volunteers to keep the annual fundraiser providing support for the community.

Since 1972, the Applefest has been an integral part of the parish. This is the first year the traditional event was canceled.

Applefest has become the largest community festival in the Diocese of Lansing. Proceeds have provided revenue for various parish campus advancements and outreach programs.

This year’s Applefest activities:

• Raffle drawing – parishioners have tickets to purchase or sell. Tickets are available at the parish office. Cars and a pontoon will be top prizes. The drawing will be held live Sunday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. on the grounds of the church.

• Inaugural golf event – The golf outing will be held Friday, Sept. 18 at Coyote Preserve at 1 p.m. This outing is in memory of Ron Lockwood. The outing is full, said Miriam Sage, co-chair of Applefest.

• Free kids golf clinic from 9 to 10 a.m., Friday, Sept. 18 at Coyote Preserve. The pro golfer teaching the class is the brother of Fr. Ryan Riley, Shane Riley. This event is full.

• Virtual road race – Much like what the Fenton Freedom Festival did and the Crim race will do, Applefest will hold a virtual race where participants will be accountable to log their time.

• Pie auction – will include three local celebrity chefs’ pies. Celebrity pie chefs include St. John’s Fr. Robert Copeland, Sean Gartland of Feast Cooking School in Fenton and Chad Brennan of Crust – a baking company in Fenton.

• Frozen pie/crisp sales – Beginning in August, people were able to pre-order pies and apple crisps to be picked up the weekend of Sept. 19. Pies have sold out.

Sage said they have looked at this modified Applefest as a positive opportunity to support the parish and community while keeping people safe and healthy. They are already discussing plans for 2021, and they ask for everyone’s continued support and prayers.

As a fundraiser, the St. John Applefest has grown to support many of the missions of St. John the Evangelist parish. The funds raised from the festival go back into the Fenton community through parish activities including support for the St. John Outreach program, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, St. John School, and other numerous parish ministries.
