What’s the best way to celebrate the end of summer? With pie, of course! Pie is the answer. It’s always the answer.
Most classic pie flavors can be found in bakeries year-round, but the best bakeries will take into account which fruits are in season. Luckily, there is no shortage of delicious summer fruits to bake into pies.
If you’re unsure which flavor will satisfy your sweet tooth, here is a definitive guide to all the best summer pie flavors.
1. Blueberry
A blueberry pie made from scratch will never fail to please a crowd, but be careful, because this is a messy flavor. Keep napkins at hand unless you want to walk around looking like you made out with a member of the Blue Man Group.
2. Key lime
Why does key lime pie make us think of “Hannah Montana”? Because it’s the best of both worlds! It combines the best part of cheesecake (the graham cracker crust, obviously) and one of the best kinds of pies (cream pies). Tart, tangy, creamy and sweet, key lime pie is truly irresistible.
3. Sour cherry
Cherry pie is not always easy to get right. Pre-made fillings are too syrupy, and often the cherries are too sweet. But a good sour cherry pie is a real winner. Plus, if you have a slice with a cup of coffee, you can pretend that you’re Special Agent Dale Cooper from “Twin Peaks.”
4. Peach or apricot tart
It’s stone fruit season! Peaches, apricots, plums, nectarines — all of these wonderful summer fruits are great for baking. Tarts are like the open-faced sandwiches of pies, and they look so beautiful with slices of fruit carefully laid out in delicate rings and patterns.
5. Mixed berry
Berries are some of our favorite fruits to eat, and this pie doesn’t force us to choose one over another! Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, strawberries — you can have them all! Every time you get a bite that includes both the buttery crust and the warm, gooey berry filling, make sure to savor the moment.
This has been a challenging and unusual summer. Give yourself a treat! Whether you choose to bake one yourself or support your local bakery, we hope this list helps guide you on your quest for summer pie.
