Pink’s reopens, proving every hot dog must have its day - LA Daily News

Twenty-one years after the Spanish Flu pandemic, Betty and Paul Pink opened a small hot dog stand in Los Angeles selling 10-cent hot dogs and sodas for a nickel.

Pink’s was serving hot dogs daily more than 80 years later — until March of this year, when another pandemic, the coronavirus, forced their doors to close.

Hot dog lovers from Southern California and beyond mourned the loss of the classic chili dog, the Mullholland Drive dog, the Lord of the Rings dog and the Poli Bacon Burrito dog.

Now, after re-doing the legendary stand to meet current COIVD-19 health guidelines, Richard Pink, son of Betty and Paul, has re-opened and is welcoming hot dog fans back.

The line down La Brea may be a bit longer because of the required six-foot social-distance spacing, but once you make your way to the painted feet on the sidewalk, you’ll find that Pink has brought back the same team that served up the Martha Stewart dog and other pre-pandemic classics.

Pink has also added new jobs to the establishment, including a full-time disinfecting staff, bathroom monitor, and security to make sure everyone complies with coronavirus restrictions.

Despite the new restrictions and fewer tables, required to accommodate social distancing, everyone grabbing a hot dog Wednesday, Aug. 12, was excited to have Pink’s back.

Spencer Emmons drove from Orange County when he heard the stand was re-opening. He had been waiting for months to sink his teeth into a Huell Howser dog, a gastronomic delight featuring a double hot dog and double chili in a single bun.

“It’s the snap of the hot dog that just can’t be beaten,” Emmons said.

“It’s a touch of normalcy in our city that Pinks is now open,” said Richard Pink as he watched a line of patrons once again snaking down La Brea Avenue. “We were open for 80 years, open every single day, and then all of a sudden we were shut down, so this is a grand re-opening.”

Pink’s hot dogs is at 709 N. La Brea Ave., Los Angeles. Free parking in the rear. Open Sunday-Thursday 9:30 a.m.-2 a.m. and Friday and Satursday 9:30 a.m.-3 a.m.
