The historic Pie Ranch farmhouse in Pescadero was destroyed by the CZU Lightning Complex, according to a Facebook post by the ranch’s cofounder.
Nancy Vail, the executive director and cofounder of the nonprofit organic educational farm, posted a video on Facebook showing the farmhouse’s chimney jutting from a pile of debris engulfed in red and orange flames.
“I thought we were in the clear, but an ember fell on the Pie Ranch historic farmhouse built in 1863 and it is gone,” Vail wrote. “May this be the beginning of transformation, may we resolve to bring back indigenous knowledge, heal the damage done since colonization, bring justice to the lands and the people, build resilient homes for all people, practice climate friendly everything, feed people, love more.”
Vail punctuated the Facebook post with a red heart emoji followed by the hashtag, “phoenixrising” and “pieranch.” She could not be reached for comment on Friday night.
The destroyed building marks just one of dozens of structures destroyed by the CZU Lightning Complex, which burned 57,000 acres in Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties. It was 2% contained as of Friday night, according to Cal Fire. The complex had destroyed 97 structures and was threatening another 24,323 structures as of Friday night.
In June, Pie Ranch’s culinary programs manager Mona Urbina told The Chronicle that the farm had been navigating the coronavirus pandemic. The farm is known for hosting large organic farm stands on Highway 1 and for its educational programming for youth.
Roughly 77,000 people have evacuated in response to the CZU Lightning Complex, Cal Fire said.
