This article is part of Business Buzz, a series designed to feature small businesses that make a big impact on the community. Participants featured will include all the locally-owned businesses that make up the fabric of Big Rapids and the surrounding area.

BIG RAPIDS — Nothing brightens someone's day quite like a cupcake, cookie or slice of homemade cake.

These sweet treats and more are available in downtown Big Rapids at The Pie wHole, a family-run bakery owned by area resident Niki Stricker.

The young business has been open for the past five years, Stricker said, with the first year operating from her home before moving into a small brick-and-mortar location in Big Rapids and eventually relocating to a larger space on Michigan Avenue.

Now at 104 S. Michigan Ave., Stricker said she loves providing a wide variety of homemade treats to the public.

"It has been great. We're always busy, and orders are booked a couple weeks out typically," she said.

Stricker explained that all of the items she makes at the shop, with the help of some of her family members, have no preservatives, gelatin or MSG — a common flavor enhancer in many foods.

"Everything is entirely from scratch," she said.

While Stricker offers different types of cupcakes, no-bake cheesecakes, brownies and more to walk-in customers, she also prepares special order items for people as well.

"It changes pretty much every week," she said. "That way people don't have the same thing every time."

For people interested in placing a special order, she said it is important to call well in advance.

"Nothing is frozen, so it takes more time," she said.

Although business is starting to pick back up, Stricker said the outbreak of COVID-19 had a significant impact on her business this year.

"We were booked solid through June, and then everything got pushed and moved back, and the restrictions keep going," she said. "Walking traffic is getting better, but there are still less visitors."

While there have been less people stopping in to buy sweet treats as of late, Stricker said the customers have always been her favorite part of owning the bakery.

"The best part is getting to know the people and seeing their lives grow," she said. "It starts with a wedding cake, and then a baby shower cake, then the first birthday and second. We get to grow with the community."

Stricker said she is looking forward to continuing to work and in Big Rapids and offer fresh and flavorful desserts to the community.

"We love it here," she said.
