BRIDGEWATER -- Get a taste of Coney Island this Independence Day, as Spanky D’s Restaurant and Boat Yard Bar hosts a hot dog-eating contest.
The 4th of July Hot Dog Eating Contest starts at 1 p.m. Saturday at the riverside Bridgewater restaurant.
Registration for competitors is due Thursday by calling the bar at 724-650-8773, stopping by in person, or messaging the restaurant’s Facebook page with name and phone number.
Contestants must be 18 or older.
Whoever eats the most hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes wins a $40 gift certificate; second-place earns a $20 gift certificate.
Spectators are welcome.
The event is inspired by the famed July 4 hot dog eating contest at Nathan’s Famous hot dog shop in the Coney Island part of Brooklyn.
Before the start at Spanky D’s, each participant will receive a pitcher of water or pop of choice. Ketchup and/or mustard will be provided if desired.
"We wanted to do something fun and different," Spanky D’s co-owner Stacey Dinsmore said. "At the time, fireworks displays were still canceled, and Fourth of July was just not feeling the same as it once did. We figured a little competition that adds a thrill for people to enjoy watching as well would give people some of that joy Fourth of July should bring you."
